A youth spent crawling through the
neglected amusements of Asbury Park can shape an artistic mind.
Precarious rides challenged bravery but provided an unrivaled
aesthetic and impression of beauty.
Graffittied games of chance and beaten mascots smashed to reveal
their mechanics…Whimsical and
sinister, fun and farce. For Tom Zimmerman, these images stayed
in his head and take form in sculpture.
Tom Zimmerman has been lurking in the background of Hollywood
but he is no stranger to Hyaena or the
art world. You've seen his talents in movies such as Apollo13,
Star Trek First Contact, and Team America.
If you've visited Disneyland, you've enjoyed his work on the
Finding Nemo ride and in the Pirate's Lair.
A graduate of Pratt with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design,
Tom draws inspiration from a variety of
mediums. Artists like Dave Cockrum, Dean Jeffries (Death Race
2000 car builder), Savage Steve Holland,
Syd Mead, and HR Giger swirl in his head in a realm of comic
books, sci-fi, and heavy metal.
His work is a conglomeration of these influences with a movement
and execution that suggests Art Clokey
and Ray Harryhausen. Each piece tells a snippet of a larger tale
and you can envision the narration from a
living aspect of the sculpted figures. They draw you in and beg
you to explore and, upon doing so, a
beautiful humor is revealed. |
