Buddy Nestor's current
work consists of brilliantly abstracted portraits of female artists.
Each
painting is a complex exploration of the individual, penetrating
the layers of his subject's psyche
yet maintaining an uncertain mystery. There is a duality present
that churns us through
thoughts of beauty and the grotesque. His art makes us question
the figure before us, wondering
what insights are being revealed about them and even their own
artwork from his vantage
point…we then begin to question our own values of desirability.
The human figure is disintegrated into a familiar, yet unrecognizable
form. Left before us are
emotions that become parasitic to the viewer. Sadness, fear,
hope, loneliness, joy all circle
through moments of terror and pure grace. Buddy opens his Twilight
Zone eye to offer a new
perspective. With a sidewise glance these portraits hint of some
extraterrestrial or subterranean
horror movie but they are, in essence, so completely human. It
is the humanity that moves
through each canvas that infuses the work with its true power. |
