The sport of Boxing has
entertained and fascinated people since its inception, literally
thousands of years ago. In
modern day, it has inspired epic films like Rocky, Raging Bull,
The Fighter, Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man, and
The Harder They Fall. These compelling tales are born from the
real life heroes: Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard,
Jack Johnson, Roberto Duran, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Oscar
De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Joe Lewis,
Joe Frazier, Jake LaMotta, George Foreman, Manny Pacquia, and
the list goes on and on. Collectively, we relate to
the battle of wills, of heart over physical body, and we cheer
with all of our being for the triumph of the underdog.
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a modern extension of the classic
pugilism. A multi faceted sport metaphorically
symbolized by the physical octagon fighters often compete within.
Unpredictable, exciting, and dramatically growing
in popularity with each event throughout the country, our new
heroes are rising from these ranks of combatants:
Chuck Liddell, George St. Pierre, Urijah Faber, Randy Couture,
Fedor Emelianenko, and so many more. There is a
great duality inherent within the nature of organized fighting.
On one hand it is seen as a violent blood sport, but
underlying the obvious is a solid foundation of training and
skill that pushes the limits of what we believe ordinary
humans are able to achieve.
From these inspirations, comes great art. Basquiat devoted many
paintings to his love of boxing, and legendary photographs of
the sport are permanently recognizable in our pop culture. This
is our artistic attempt to capture the
passion, struggle, and drive found in two sports whose appeal
bridges the divide between economic class and social
status and allows wealthy and poor alike to be eager spectators
simply rooting for our heroes. |
