When You're Strange... A Tribute to the Addams Family & the Munsters - Group Exhibit- I grew up on reruns of The Addams Family and The Munsters. It was these two TV shows, along with In Search of and The Twilight Zone, that planted a love for all things mysterious and macabre in my young psyche. Every other TV show depicted this image of the American family that bored and horrified me. I simply didn’t like what most other kids liked when I was growing up. I always felt like an outsider that was drawn to the darker things. I saw beauty and humor there that made me smile. The Munsters and The Addams Family, they appealed to that outcast part within us all, I think. They showed a true alternative to the clean cut American ideal and, no matter how strange they seemed to the rest of their fictional world, each family was a loving supportive group that stayed true to their ideals. This is important. They might have just been TV shows, but for every kid with a slightly twisted sense of humor and a wish that Halloween never ended, they were so much more. They represent the knowledge that there are other kids out there just like us…and we’re all part of the same beautiful family. Hyaena is extremely excited to kick off 2015 with this tribute to television’s two twisted families. So dig out your taxidermy, feed the beast under the stairs, brush up on your Spanish, and dig this exhibit. (P.S.
