- Daniel Lee Siebert
-
(17 June 1954 - 22 April 2008) Daniel
was an American serial killer who was convicted of three murders.
After his capture, he had confessed to five murders in Alabama
and several more across the country, claiming at least a dozen
victims. His crimes were first noticed in 1986, when he murdered
Sherri Weathers, a student at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf
and Blind in Talladega, and her two children. Investigation lead
to the discovery of another murdered student, Linda Jarman.
Daniel was working as an art teacher using the name "Daniel
Spence" and was questioned after police traced him to Sherri
Weathers. A check of Spence's fingerprints revealed that he was
in fact Daniel Siebert, who had a previous conviction of manslaughter
in 1979 and was wanted on assault charges in San Francisco, California.
He was also linked to Linda Odum, a waitress who he had been
dating and was reported missing the previous February. Her murdered
remains were found the following month. Fingerprints linked Siebert
to her stolen car.
Siebert spent the next six months on the run where he was apprehended
in Nashville, Tennessee. He was convicted and sentenced to death
in Alabama. His execution date was set for October 25, 2007 but
it was delayed due to appeals. While waiting for his execution,
Siebert underwent treatment for pancreatic cancer. Also, in December
of 2007, he was investigated in relation to a pornography case.
No action was taken against him, but a personal correspondent
of Daniel's was charged for multiple sex crimes due to the investigation's
findings.
Siebert died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, of complications from his
cancer. Prison system spokesman Brian Corbett said Siebert was
pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m. at Holman Correctional Facility
near Atmore, where he had been awaiting execution for more than
21 years. His death created a national outrage amongst death
penalty and victims right advocates due to the fact that he passed
away from natural causes months after he was supposed to be executed
by the state.
