- Sean Madden -

Hailing from Rochester, New York, Sean Madden has been battling in the trenches of the
underground art scene for many years. His work has been published in the UK, Canada,
Australia, and the USA in the form of t-shirts as well as book and magazine covers and interior
illustrations. Sean's dark, pop-surrealistic style combines with elements of psychedelia and
LowBrow art to create the perfect medium for interpreting the overflow of ideas that come
from his subconscious.

Sean Madden's artwork has always been very dark and surrealistic. As a small child, his art
frequently got him sent to the principal's office. The former sci-fi and horror illustrator is well
known for his twisted pen and ink drawings and his dark, very detailed oil paintings. Many of his
works feature grim biomorphic figurations, weird landscapes, and contorted humanoid anatomy.
However, Sean's art is made all the more disturbing by the fact that he painted and drew much
of it while employed as a counselor. He is, therefore, no stranger to the mental anguish,
isolation, and depressive ugliness in his works. In his new solo show here at Hyaena,
"Psychotic Reaction," Sean blends his traditionally dark style with surreal, absurdist imagery
to plumb the depths of the unconscious mind. The effect is dreamlike, hallucinatory imagery
that compels, fascinates and disturbs.

The art for "Psychotic Reaction" was created while Sean was placed on leave from his position
as a school counselor due to a small group of conservative parents complaining about the
nature of his art. Sean has since won this case, and is back to work again. Psychotic Reaction
is very much a victory celebration and an art show of some of the best imagery Madden has
created to date.
