Kiss the Goat!! - Group Art Exhibit - The word "tragedy" stems from the Greek word "tragodia," which literally translates to "goat-song." There are many theories as to how this association evolved within language. It is commonly believed that the origins are found in Athenian play competitions where the prize was a live goat. These contests were part of the worship to the God Dionysus, involving chants and dances in his honor. Sometimes the goat would be sacrificed, and a goat lament sung as the sacrifice was made. Hence the goat-song became intertwined with the Greek plays. Others believe that in the plays themselves, men and women would wear goat-costumes to dress up as satyrs; half-goat beings that worshipped and surrounded Dionysus in his revelry. The Romans knew Dionysus later as Bacchus, God of the vine, grape harvest, winemaking, wine, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre. The image of the goat, itself, is so intertwined in our various mythologies, from tales of nourishing the Gods themselves with their milk to stories of tricking mortals onto dangerous paths. From the God Pan to the Christian images of the Devil, the imagery of the goat follows us through the centuries. So now, with our eye towards the upcoming grape harvest, let's make Bacchus smile with an art exhibit celebrating our cloven hooved friends.
