Cancer - Group Exhibit - Cancer - the mere thought of the disease can stir so many emotions inside of us. With this exhibit, each artist was asked to create a piece of artwork which represents their immediate thought upon hearing the word "cancer." We wanted to build a collective monument which captures all of the feelings we associate with it: dread, helplessness, fear, pain, worry, melancholy, death. The creation of Dark Art, at times, stems from our need to handle the difficult parts of life. Through creating, or experiencing art of a darker nature, we undergo a personal healing. It can be beautifully cathartic. Most adults have had some association with cancer, be it though a friend, relative, or themselves. This exhibit is intended to carry the weight of the emotions we experience when facing this seemingly insurmountable beast. The viewer is invited to experience these feelings that we are evoking through the art, and to understand that they are not alone. At the most horrible times, no one is truly alone when dealing with something so universal. Empathy and emotions make us human, and even strangers can find comfort through shared experiences. Art of this nature helps to bring us together. It offers comfort and helps us to endure…helps us to keep moving forward with hope.
